Moving Totes vs Cardboard Boxes: What Works for a Charleston Move

By Chad, Boxtrot Rentals · October 30, 2026 · 4 min read

Most people grab cardboard because that's what everybody does. It isn't always the cheap, easy option it looks like, especially in a Charleston summer. Here's an honest side by side, including the spots where cardboard comes out ahead.

Where cardboard wins

Cardboard is light, it folds flat, and if you score free boxes from a grocery store, it costs nothing upfront. There's no return date, either. Apartment Therapy points out that reusable moving boxes are heavier and usually cost more than cardboard, and a rental has to go back when you're done. Those are fair points.

Moving one way out of the area? Cardboard probably makes more sense. Our totes have to come back to us.

Where totes win

  • No tape, no folding, no box cutter. The lids are attached.
  • They stack straight and don't crush, so the bottom of the stack shows up in one piece.
  • They don't soak through. SpareFoot notes they hold up to water and don't draw bugs like silverfish the way cardboard can.
  • Nothing to break down or drag to the curb when you're done. We come get them.

The Charleston part

Cardboard and Lowcountry humidity don't get along. A box that sat in a hot garage for a week goes soft at the corners, and a summer afternoon storm halfway through loading can turn a stack of boxes to mush. Totes don't care about either one.

Historic homes downtown often have narrow stairs and tight turns. A tote with real handles is easier to carry up a skinny staircase than a sagging box you're hugging with both arms.

What about cost?

New boxes, tape, and markers add up fast, and you still have to break everything down afterward. Our Trot package is 20 totes for $149 a week, with delivery and pickup included. The tote calculator shows what your move needs and what it costs in two taps.

Our honest take

Moving locally and packing more than a closet? Totes save time, tape, and a pile of trash at the end. Moving one way out of the area, or storing things for months? Cardboard is the better call, and we'll tell you that.
